The studio has announced release dates for its several movies including 'The Dark Tower' and 'Barbie' which will hit U.S. theaters in January 2017 and in June 2017 respectively.

AceShowbiz - Sony Pictures Entertainment has set a series of release dates for plenty of its upcoming projects. The studio officially announced that Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" and "Barbie" movie would be released in the U.S. on January 13, 2017 and June 2, 2017 respectively.

"The Dark Tower" is a long-gestating project which has been in development since 2007. Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner were reported to write a new script for the upcoming movie. Based on the first volume in King's novel series "The Gunslinger", the movie centers on Roland Deschain, a man who lives in a world reminiscent of the Old West but with magic. He travels across a desolate and vaguely post-apocalyptic landscape in an attempt to find a black tower.

Another movie which is set to go head-to-head with other tentpole movies in 2017 is "Barbie" live-action movie. Diablo Cody is set to rewrite the script which was initially penned by Jenny Bicks ("What A Girl Wants", "Rio 2").

Back in 2014, Tim Kilpin, executive VP of global brands for Mattel, said that the movie would feature Barbie's playful personality. "Barbie has entertained children and inspired their imagination and creativity for more than 50 years," Kilpin explained. "Now is the right time in Barbie's celebrated history for her to star in a live-action, contemporary comedy that brings her playful personality to life for generations of fans." Another rumor said that Barbie would be "modern-day Mary Poppins" in the live-action movie.
