Rupert Wyatt to Direct 'X-Men' Spin-Off 'Gambit'
Movie

The 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' director will helm the movie starring Channing Tatum as the titular character.

AceShowbiz - Twentieth Century Fox's "X-Men" spin-off "Gambit (2016)" has finally found its director. Rupert Wyatt, who directed "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", will helm the comic book movie starring Channing Tatum as the titular character.

Channing is also producing the project along with Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. Rupert will direct the movie with a script written by Josh Zetumer. The Gambit character was created in 1990 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee.

Gambit a.k.a. Remy LeBeau is a mutant with the ability to mentally create, control and manipulate kinetic energy. Raised in New Orleans, he is also a thief who often speaks in a Cajun accent.

Back in May, Channing revealed the origin story plans for the movie. "Josh Zetumer just turned in the first draft of the script, and it's killer," the "Magic Mike XXL" actor shared, "None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the X-Men world. But we're going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies. It's always about saving the world (Laughs), but maybe we're going to shift things a little bit. There's so many ways you can take [an origin story]. You could do it like 'Batman Begins', or a different take and go the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' route. All I can say is, I'm super excited."

"Gambit" is set to hit U.S. theaters on October 7, 2016 following the release of "X-Men: Apocalypse" on May 27, 2016. The superhero movie will face off against Warner Bros.'s Ben Affleck-directed flick "Live by Night" and Universal's "Monster High".
