'The thing we talk about in the writers' room all the time is 'Game of Thrones',' co-creator Danny Strong says how the upcoming season of the FOX series is similar to the HBO show.

AceShowbiz - "Empire" season 2 is partly inspired by "Game of Thrones", according to series co-creator Danny Strong. At ATX Television Festival in Austin on Saturday, June 6, Strong talked about the theme of the upcoming installment of the FOX hit series and compared it to the HBO medieval drama.

"Season one was who will inherit the throne, and season two is warring kingdoms," he said. "So you'll see the kingdom go to war for the throne." Strong further shared, "The thing we talk about in the writers' room all the time is 'Game of Thrones'."

"It goes back to the 'King Lear' of it all," he continued, "so the idea of telling you this modern-day pop soap opera but also try to frame it in an epic, mythological kingdom-type framework is, to me, the most exciting part of the show. We're talking about kings and queens and princes and that sort of language. The continuation of those battles is what I dig the most."

Writer Wendy Calhoun, meanwhile, teased that the second season would explore "new relationship dynamics" and feature "more Cookie and Andre." Strong chimed in, "Episode 204 - we're writing that one right now."

Talking about the episode count which was upped from 12 to 18 following the success of the first season, Strong admitted, "It's so stressful. Eighteen more episodes is a lot. It's not a cookie-cutter type show."

He, however, is excited that they'll get more screen time to explore the Lyon family. "I'm very attached to the mythology of the Lyon family," Strong said. "There's going to be, hopefully, a storyline in season two that's a flashback story that's going to be an origin story for one of the characters. I loved the flashbacks in season one - they're so powerful. When you go back and see where Lucious was and where Cookie was, I find it very powerful and poignant."
