'Downton Abbey' Creator on Romances for Older Characters: 'It's Truthful'
TV

Julian Fellowes says, 'In my world, on the whole older people have emotions like everybody else, and I think the show demonstrates that.'

AceShowbiz - "Downton Abbey" cast and creator talked about the upcoming sixth and final season at a panel discussion at the Writers Guild Theater on Saturday, June 6. While filming is currently underway, series creator Julian Fellowes said "it being the last one hasn't really sunk in." He added, "I think it will really start having an impact when we film the last scene in the dining room or the last scene in the library or whatever, and we'll check that off the list."

Star Hugh Bonneville said he still had no idea how the show's going to end, claiming, "I haven't read the series finale," as Fellowes said he hadn't "even written it." Imagining how it would end, Fellowes said, "It will be funny when the each character is finished, and they say, 'And that's the last of Mrs. Patmore or whatever' That's always a strange moment - even on an ordinary movie or one-off job -- when people who have been all through it start to peel away."

After five years filming most parts of the show in Highclere Castle, Bonneville said, "It's a pretty nice office to come to work in." His co-star Laura Carmichael chimed in, "When it's sunny in the summer outside the house, it's just dreamy -- it's like not being at work. Outside lying on the lawn trying not to get your costume dirty, it feels like a very lucky experience."

Meanwhile, talking about romances for older characters on the show, Fellowes said, "I like older characters to have emotional live, because I think it's truthful." He took a swipe at Hollywood movies as explaining, "In movieland, everyone stops being a sexual creature at about 32, or at least the women do. The men are allowed to keep going until they are 78 - I've never worked that out. In my world, on the whole older people have emotions like everybody else, and I think the show demonstrates that."

In the fifth season finale of "Downton Abbey", Charles Carson (Jim Carter) and Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) agreed to marry. Fellowes previously teased that their plan might not go smoothly, saying, "Well, you know, 'Downton' is a bumpy path."
