'The Flash' Boss on Shocking Death in Season Finale: It's the Best for Other Characters
TV

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says the dead character 'dies knowing he is a hero,' and confirms Tom Cavanagh's return as series regular in next season.

AceShowbiz - One of The Flash's allies became a casualty in the season finale. [SPOILER ALERT!] Eddie (Rick Cosnett) made a big sacrifice by taking his own life in order to stop Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh), which is his descendant, and save his friends.

Speaking of the decision to kill off Eddie, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells The Hollywood Reporter, "When we decided to name him Thawne, we hoped the audience would suspect Eddie was the Reverse Flash because of his last name. We always knew Eddie would be his ancestor, but we weren't quite sure how we would end the season. The way things were moving forward, it felt like it was the best thing to do for his character."

Calling it a "difficult decision" because "we all love Rick so much both personally and professionally," he says in another interview with Deadline, "Despite how much we adore the character of Eddie and truly adore Rick as a professional and a friend, this was what was best for Eddie and all the other characters, what was best for the show." He adds, "At the end of the day, he dies knowing he is a hero, he eliminates Eobard from existence."

On how his death will affect other characters, Kreisberg teases, "Eddie was a large part of everyone's life. He and Iris spent a year and a half together, and he died for her. Joe [Jesse L. Martin] has lost a partner, and Barry [Grant Gustin] has lost a friend. Eddie's death will have a major impact on all of their lives as they cope and figure out how to move forward in season 2."

Asked whether Eddie will be back on the show, Kreisberg coyly replies, "The great thing with our show - you saw it with Colin Donnell and with Caity Lotz [whose deceased Sara is returning for spin-off 'DC's Legends of Tomorrow'] - is just because you are dead doesn't mean you're not coming back. Especially in the world of The Flash, which involves time travel and real hardcore science fiction, there's always a way for Eddie to return and we hope Rick will."

While Cosnett won't return to the next season following his character's death, Kreisberg confirms Tom Cavanagh will be back as a series regular. He, however, won't elaborate how Dr. Harrison Wells, whose body was taken over by Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash, will be reintroduced in season 2.

During the season finale, fans got a glimpse of Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) as Killer Frost when Barry was running through the speed force. On when it will be brought into the storyline again, Kreisberg replies, "When we saw in the speed force, we saw Caitlin really and truly affected. Whether that happens next year or the year after that, we'll have to wait and see what the speed force tells us to do."

There's also a look at Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee), part of "Legends of Tomorrow" team, in the episode. Kreisberg reveals the decision to include Hawkgirl was made at the last minute after he read an article which said, "CW confirms Hawkgirl not in Flash season finale." He says, "It really wasn't part of it, but we already had this sequence designed where we were going to go around the city and have everybody look up into the sky and see the singularity. We were up there shooting the 'Legends' presentation, so Ciara was going to be there anyway. I asked our line producer, 'Look, I know this is last minute, but is there anyway we could stage her as part of the crowd?' We picked up that shot. It's just so much fun for us because it's just yet another glimpse at what the future of these characters are going to be."

"The Flash" will return with season 2 this fall on The CW.
