'Pitch Perfect 2' Leads Weekend Box Office, Earns Biggest Film Musical Opening Ever

The sequel of the Elizabeth Banks-directed flick earned an estimated $70.3 million, surpassing 'High School Musical 3' to become the biggest movie musical opening of all time.

AceShowbiz - "Pitch Perfect 2" has debuted with an estimated $70.3 million at the North American box office, beating "Mad Max: Fury Road". It surpassed "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" to become the biggest movie musical opening of all time. The sequel earned more in its first weekend than the first "Pitch Perfect" entire total of $65 million.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" debuted in second place with an estimated $44.4 million in North America. Internationally, the R-rated, post-apocalyptic movie beat "Pitch Perfect 2" overall with $65 million, putting its global debut at $109.4 million. The Elizabeth Banks-directed film, meanwhile, earned an estimated $38.1 million internationally for a world total of $108.4 million.

Starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and newest addition Hailee Steinfeld, "Pitch Perfect 2" also marked the highest domestic opening ever for a first-time director. Three-quarters of ticket buyers were female and mostly were under 25.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron", meanwhile, snagged the third place with approximately $38.8 million in its third week, bringing its global total to nearly $1.143 billion and making it the eighth highest-grossing movie of all time. "Hot Pursuit" followed behind with an estimated $5.7 million while "Furious 7" landed fifth with approximately $3.6 million in its seventh weekend.
