Confirming Shearer's exit, showrunner Al Jean reveals they won't kill off the characters voiced by Shearer but tap other voice actors for the roles.

AceShowbiz - After Harry Shearer hinted at his exit from "The Simpsons", showrunner Al Jean confirmed it on Thursday, May 14. In an email to CNNMoney, he wrote, "As the Simpsons continues its 27th and 28th seasons, Harry Shearer will not be within the show."

Shearer had been a longtime cast member of the FOX animated series. He voiced several characters, including Ned Flanders, Mr. Burns, Rev. Lovejoy, Dr. Hibbert, Principal Skinner, Smithers, Kent Brockman and Otto.

Still, Jean claimed that Shearer's departure wouldn't significantly affect the show as he added, "We do not plan to 'kill off' his characters, but replace them with the most talented members of the voice over community."

Shearer first revealed that he would leave "The Simpsons" on Wednesday. It was reported that he turned down a $14 million deal to extend his contract with the show. He, however, denied that the dispute was about money. "This because I wanted what we've always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best," so he wrote on Twitter.

Executive producer James L. Brooks seemingly still held out hope that Shearer would return as he tweeted on Thursday, "Hey, we tried. We're still trying. Harry, no kidding, let's talk."
