Aubrey Peeples Is Rock Star in 'Jem and the Holograms' First Trailer

Aubrey Peeples stars as a teenage girl who becomes famous after her video recording goes viral in the movie adaptation of the 1980s cartoon series.

AceShowbiz - Universal Pictures released a first trailer of "Jem and the Holograms" on Tuesday, May 12. It focuses on Jem, an ordinary girl who becomes successful and famous for her band after becoming an online recording sensation.

Aubrey Peeples is starring as Jerrica Benton, a girl who becomes famous after her sister, Kimber (Stefanie Scott), uploads one of her songs to YouTube. When the video is going viral, the world's biggest record company signs the band which consists of Jerrica and her sisters. The company changes their looks and gives a new name for Jerrica, Jem. As they gain popularity, their relationship turns bad. "You don't want us around anymore? That's not how our family's supposed to act," one of Jem's sisters says to her.

"It's actually about a group of young people who are going to be inundated with this idea of fame and fortune and products and stuff, and within all that, how do you stay true to who you really are?" director Jon M. Chu told USA Today. "That's the real soul of the movie." Peeples also teased fans about the movie in her statement, "I can guarantee you that there's going to be a lot of pink. Nobody will be disappointed with the hair, makeup and the fashion." She added, "We had a lot of different performance looks, each one is truly outrageous. I look at pictures and I can't believe that's me. It's so weird."

Aurora Perrineau and Hayley Kiyoko join the cast as Shana and Aja respectively while Ryan Guzman stars as Rio. "Jem and the Holograms" is written by Ryan Landels and is slated for a release in the U.S. on October 23.

The movie is an adaptation of a cartoon series which was created by Christy Marx. The cartoon series was a joint collaboration from Hasbro, Marvel and Sunbow Productions. It began airing in 1985 and ran for three seasons.
