Patricia Arquette Defends Her Oscars Equality Remarks Amid Backlash
Celebrity

While the 'Boyhood' actress received wild applause from the audience for her Oscars acceptance speech, what she said in the press room has landed her in hot water.

AceShowbiz - Patricia Arquette's acceptance speech after winning an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role on Sunday, February 22 earned her a wild applause from the audience with Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez fully supporting the statement. However, what she said in the press room has landed her in hot water.

Patricia took to Twitter on Monday to address her equality remarks. "Wage equality will help ALL women of all races in America. It will also help their children and society," she wrote, "Women have been basically paying a gender tax for generations. I have long been an advocate for the rights of the #LBGT community. The question is why aren't you an advocate for equality for ALL women?"

The "Boyhood" actress went on, "If you are fighting against #Equalpay you are fighting for ALL women and especially women of color to make less money than men. Guess which women are the most negatively effected in wage inequality? Women of color. #Equalpay for ALL women. Women stand together in this."

She then shared a screenshot of "The Consequences of Gender Inequity", captioning it, "I don't care if people are pissed The truth is that wage inequality adversely effects women."

Patricia continued, "Did you know that a disproportionate amount of children living below the poverty line are from single female households? @ERAeducation. This is a call to action. Women are being discriminated and it is having serious consequences on them and their children. My children are not living below the poverty line. That does't mean I don't care about the kids who are. DO YOU? Then help their moms." She added a link to an article about how the wage gap hurts families.

Patricia previously told reporters in the press room, "It's time for us. It's time for women. Equal means equal. The truth is the older women get, the less money they make...the highest percentage of children living in poverty are female-headed households, and it's inexcusable that we go around the world and we talk about equal rights for women in other countries and we don't...have equal rights for women in America and we don't because when they wrote the Constitution, they didn't intend it for women."

"The truth is: even though we sort of feel like we have equal rights in America, right under the surface, there are huge issues that are applied that really do affect women. And it's time for all the women in America and all the men that love women, and all the gay people, and all the people of color that we've all fought for to fight for us now," she added.

Stacey Dash is one of some people who disagreed with Patricia's statement. Stacey said on Monday's "Fox and Friends", "I was appalled. I couldn't believe it. First of all, Patricia Arquette needs to do her history. In 1963, Kennedy passed an equal pay law. It's still in effect. I didn't get the memo that I didn't have any rights."

Stacey also tweeted on Sunday night, "Hey @PattyArquette, KENNEDY signed the Equal Pay Act in 1963! Why doesn't Obama/Holder simply enforce? https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=9267 #Oscars."
