'Star Trek 3' Fans Campaigning to Get Jonathan Frakes as Director
Movie

Shortly after news that Roberto Orci was no longer expected to serve behind the lens surfaced, some fans start launching a campaign on Twitter with hashtag #BringInRiker.

AceShowbiz - Some fans apparently already have someone in mind to direct "Star Trek 3". Shortly after news that Roberto Orci was no longer attached to the flick as a director emerged, some fans started a campaign on Twitter with the hashtag #BringInRiker to get actor/director Jonathan Frakes to replace Orci.

Frakes previously played Will Riker in "Star Trek: The Next Generation", "Star Trek: First Contact" and "Star Trek: Insurrection". His other credits include "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" among others. So far, Frakes has not commented on fans' request.

Orci was originally expected to serve as the director after J.J. Abrams left. Orci, however, will still take part in the project as a producer. He also wrote the script alongside Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne for the movie which is reportedly targeting a 2016 release date.

In the wake of Orci's departure, Badass Digest shared some info regarding the exit. According to the report, the movie's production was shut down last month after Orci and Paramount had a disagreement over the direction of the script.

Some sources say the script sees the Enterprise, the Vulcans and a new alien race competing to get a time travel device. The Vulcans want to use it to save their destroyed planet. Younger Captain Kirk, played by Chris Pine, will share screen with the older version of the character, played by William Shatner.
