The 77-year-old entertainer released himself from his duty as a board member of his beloved alma mater.

AceShowbiz - Bill Cosby decided to step down from his role as a trustee of Temple University amid allegations that he sexually assaulted several women over the years. The 77-year-old actor announced his resignation in a statement released by the university on Monday, December 1.

"I have always been proud of my association with Temple University," Cosby said. "I have always wanted to do what would be in the best interests of the university and its students. As a result, I have tendered my resignation from the Temple University Board of Trustees."

Cosby attended classes in the university in the early 1960s before his comedy career took off. The Philadelphia native became a board member in 1982. Board chairman Patrick O'Connor accepted Cosby's resignation because the actor didn't want to be a distraction to the board, the AP reported.

"The Board of Trustees accepts Dr. Cosby's resignation from the board and thanks him for his service to the university," a statement from the university said.

O'Connor added, "He didn't comment on the allegations (Monday). They were from (as long as) 50 years ago." Cosby has strongly denied the allegations and has never been criminally charged.
