Mitchell will succeed Michael C. Hall whose engagement as the transgender rocker in the Broadway hit will end in mid-January.

AceShowbiz - John Cameron Mitchell made headlines on Thursday, November 20 as it was announced that he would reprise his role in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch". He will return to the role of Hedwig for an eight-week limited engagement starting January 21 at the Belasco Theatre.

Mitchell is the co-creator and original star of the Broadway hit, playing the transgender German rocker also made famous by Neil Patrick Harris and Michael C. Hall among others. He will step back into the role after Hall completes his stint on January 18.

"I am in equal parts thrilled and terrified to be returning to Hedwig," Mitchell said in a statement. "Fifteen years ago she kicked my butt so hard that I quit acting. But like an expertly facelifted ex-wife, she's lured me back. The killer new work by Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells and Michael C. Hall has left much larger pumps to fill. Here's hoping I don't need a walker by the end of the run."

Mitchell wrote the show with composer-lyricist Stephen Trask and began off-off-Broadway at the Westbeth Theater and Jane Street Theater in 1998. "I'm having fun going through the old show in my mind and thinking about throwing in more ad-libs and rock 'n' roll like we did downtown," the actor told NY Times. On how it would differ from the more current versions, Mitchell said, "I think it will be more frayed."

The production, directed by Michael Mayer, has won four Tony Awards this year including Best Musical Revival.
