The 'Blue Lagoon' actress talks about her complicated relationship with her late mother prior to the release of her new book 'There Was a Little Girl'.

AceShowbiz - Brooke Shields opens up about her mother Teri Shields in a new book. In her upcoming book "There Was a Little Girl", hitting the stores on November 18, the actress shares some stories of her complicated relationship with her late mother and manager who was an alcoholic.

Speaking to New York Post ahead of the book's release, Shields shares what she remembers from her childhood. "I think the hardest part was reliving the happy memories. That's when you think the ending could be different, that there was hope - and then you're struck with reality and think, 'What a shame.' "

During the chat, Shields recalls that she spent much time in bars with her mother. Her mother sometimes dropped her off at a male neighbor's house so that she could go out alone. The male neighbor later boasted at a funeral "that he slept with [Brooke] (literally, they just slept) when she was a toddler."

"In this day and age, it's child abuse. But in the late '60s, if you were in an apartment building and had a friend there, you dropped your kid off ... It was sort of sad that she couldn't afford a baby sitter," said Shields who built her modeling and career since young age.

Shields also remembers her mother urging her to "date nice men" like Michael Jackson, George Michael and John Travolta. One of her admirers included Woody Allen who took her to a dinner when they were working in "Annie Hall".

Apart from stories about her relationship with her mother, Shields opens up about losing her virginity to Dean Cain at the age of 22. In an excerpt published on PEOPLE, Shields shares that she met Cain at Princeton University. They were crazy about each other, "always holding hands and trying to find ways to be alone and kiss, but poor guy, I made him wait."

"I think it was more tortuous for him because I was used to shutting that part [of me] off," she explains, adding that she felt her mother played part in her love life. "I felt as if she was watching," she says.

Shields, who was feeling overwhelmed, then recalls what happened after they had sex. "I actually kind of tumbled off it and started running. I was buck naked streaking down the hallway and running like I had just stolen someone's wallet," she writes.

"I didn't know where I began and where my mother ended. And that meant I didn't know how to fit Dean in," she admits. The pair broke up not long after.

Shields told Cain about the story and he didn't mind her including the story in the book. "He said, 'As long as you're happy with it, I'm comfortable with it.' There's nothing sordid about it. He's such a good guy and a sweet human being," Shields gushes.
