If the estimate number holds, the Disney animation will be the fourth animation to win over live-action after opening more than $50 million.

AceShowbiz - As predicted, "Big Hero 6" soared past "Interstellar" in the box office race this weekend. The Disney animation took in an estimated $56.2 million while the Christopher Nolan sci-fi flick pulled in approximately $52.2 million including the limited release on Tuesday evening.

"It's just ahead of what we said we thought we'd do coming into the weekend. It sets us up in a really great way for a run ahead," said Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution. "It's encouraging to have been ahead of a movie like 'Interstellar', which is obviously made by one of the great filmmakers of my lifetime."

Telling the story of a brilliant robotics prodigy, "Big Hero 6" continued the history of animation triumph over live-action movie in the $50 million plus opening range. "Wall-E", "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" and "Monsters University" all won over "Wanted (2008)", "Prometheus" and "World War Z" respectively.

Meanwhile, "Interstellar" benefited a lot from screening on IMAX. It took in $13.4 million on 368 screens with a per-screen average of more than $36,000. It was IMAX's best opening for a November release. "This is definitely the broadest appeal movie that's going to be in the marketplace this November," said Rob Moore, Paramount's vice chairman. "You have a lot of audiences that really connect with the film."

Meanwhile, "Gone Girl", "Ouija" and "St. Vincent" completed the top 5 box office position this weekend. In its sixth week, "Gone Girl" managed to add approximately $6.1 million closely followed by "Ouija" at around $6 million. "St. Vincent", that started off in limited theaters, brought in an estimated $5.7 million.
