The streaming giant is producing a series based on the book 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'.

AceShowbiz - Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events" is getting a small-screen treatment. Netflix announces that it has acquired the rights to produce a series based on the 13 best-selling novels by Daniel Handler, who often writes under his pen name Lemony Snicket.

Handler will serve as an executive producer. Netflix will be producing the series in association with Paramount Television. Paramount Pictures was the studio behind 2004's movie "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" starring Jim Carrey. The actor, however, is not expected to reprise his role for the TV project.

"I can't believe it," Snicket said from an undisclosed location. "After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books."

"A Series of Unfortunate Events" revolves around three orphaned kids, Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire, who face trials and tribulations at the hands of the evil Count Olaf, a distant uncle, as they try to uncover the secret of their parents' death. The books have sold more than 65 million copies worldwide.

Netflix has not set a release date for the series.
