"When it feels scary to jump, that is exactly when you jump," he says. "Otherwise you end up staying in the same place your whole life." As problems arise, his wife fiercely defends him, "We have nothing to hide from you. My husband is a good man, don't mistake his honesty for weakness. He deserves respect. ... this was very disrespectful."

The film is set in New York City during the winter of 1981, which is statistically one of the most violent years in the city's history. It follows the lives of an immigrant and his family as the rampant violence, decay and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built.

J. C. Chandor ("Margin Call", "All Is Lost") serves as a director. Supported by David Oyelowo, it's scheduled to open in selected theaters in the U.S. on December 31.
