Country Singer Aaron Lewis Flubs Lyrics of National Anthem During World Series

During the second line of 'Star-Spangled Banner', the Staind frontman sings 'were so gallantly streaming,' the words that will appear later in the song, instead of 'at the twilight's last gleaming.'

AceShowbiz - Aaron Lewis made a minor mistake when he performed the national anthem before Game 5 of the World Series at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Sunday night, October 26. The country singer sounded great singing "Star-Spangled Banner" but he drew criticism from many viewers after he messed up some of the lyrics.

Lewis made the mistake when singing the second line of the song. Instead of singing the correct "at the twilight's last gleaming," he sang "were so gallantly streaming." The words are supposed to appear a few lines later in the National Anthem.

Viewers immediately took to social media to criticize Lewis. "Did Aaron Lewis just rewrite the National Anthem?" a Twitter user wrote. Another added, "Aaron Lewis messed up the national anthem? Same dude who released a country album full of songs about how much more American he is than us?"

Lewis has reacted to the backlash. He apologized for the flub in a statement posted on his Facebook page later on Sunday. "All I can say is I'm sorry and ask for the nation's forgiveness. My nerves got the best of me and I am completely torn up about what happened," he said.

"America is the greatest country in the world. 'The Star-Spangled Banner' means so much to so many, including myself," he continued. "I hope everyone can understand the intensity of the situation and my true intent of this performance. I hope that the nation, Major League Baseball and the many fans of our national pastime can forgive me."
