The 'Les Miserables' actress recalled a funny story when she was invited by Matthew's wife to a surprise party for the 'Dallas Buyers Club' actor.

AceShowbiz - Anne Hathaway paid tribute to Matthew McConaughey who was honored with the American Cinematheque Award on Tuesday night, October 21 at L.A.'s Beverly Hilton Hotel. The 31-year-old actress said she became friends with Matthew while filming "Interstellar".

Anne recalled an embarrassing moment she had at Matthew's house. "I have a story and it's kind of embarrassing," she said. The "Alice in Wonderland" actress was invited by Matthew's wife Camila Alves to a surprise party for him. "My husband and I drive up. It's a Sunday. It's a beautiful day," she shared. "There are no cars around and we thought, OK, we're on time. We're on time for once."

Anne added, "I go, 'Surprise!' And he goes, 'Yeah, you've got to come in.' Matthew turns around and goes, 'Party was last night.' "

Matthew then told Anne and Adam Shulman to come into his house and have a glass of wine. "Matthew said, 'Come inside. Let me pour you a glass of wine,' " she recalled, "And then Matthew looks at me, very deeply, and says, 'Hey, we can be upset about this. We can be mad about this. Or we can go with it. And we can have a great story.' "

"And that glass of wine led to the first bottle - I stopped counting after four," the "Love and Other Drugs" star continued, "And then I went with him to someone's surprise birthday party that night that I crashed. And you know what? It was a great story and a lot of smiles because of it... You were so good to me and Adam."

Anne said she was impressed with Matthew since the first day of their "Interstellar" filming. "It's our first day on 'Interstellar'," she said, "I don't know what to expect but I meet you and you are present. You seem so cool and you seem so sincere and I walk away and I think, 'Wow, that guy's just amazing.' "

Reese Witherspoon, who also participated in the tribute, said of her "Mud" co-star, "[Matthew] grew up on cattle ranches, dirt roads and oil fields instilled with the values of his hardworking father, his equally hardworking brothers and his tough-as-nails and super sweet southern mother who told him never to look at the dust on the table, focus on the rose in the glass. And all of this is written on his face, a face that tells the story of drive and sincerity. He grew up appreciating his family and where he came from."
