Nielsen Fixes Software Error, Says ABC News Didn't Break NBC's Winning Streak

Nielsen acknowledges that its report last week that ABC's 'World News Tonight' topped NBC's 'Nightly News' was incorrect.

AceShowbiz - ABC News didn't break NBC's 263-week winning streak after all. After fixing a software error that had affected its measurement of television audiences since March, Nielsen says that its report last week that ABC's "World News Tonight with David Muir" beat "NBC Nightly News" anchored by Brian Williams was incorrect.

The technical glitch caused several shows to receive larger-than-normal boosts in Live and Same Day viewing numbers. In the "World News Tonight" vs. "Nightly News" case, the company previously reported that the former had averaged 8.42 million viewers while the latter posted an average of 8.25 million viewers for the week beginning September 29.

The corrected numbers now reveal that NBC's "Nightly News" still wins over ABC's "World News Tonight" with 8.28 million compared to ABC News' 8.11 million viewers. Nielsen says NBC also won last week, so the show's winning streak now stretched to 265.

"We are pleased that the corrected numbers confirm that 'NBC Nightly News' is the No. 1 news broadcast in America, and has been for the last 265 weeks," the network says in a statement. "We remain, first and foremost, committed to our viewers and bringing them a broadcast with credible, authoritative news they can trust."

A rep for ABC News also responds after the real numbers are revealed, "For us, it has always been about the viewer at the end of the day. 'World News Tonight' is in the tightest evening news race in several years and we're honored the viewers are responding."
