Marvel Animation Studio teams up with the Disney children network to continue the adventure of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora and Drax the Destroyer.

AceShowbiz - "Guardians of the Galaxy" is heading to small screen next year as an animated series on Disney XD. First footage and concept art for the new animation series were released at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 10.

Part of the Marvel Universe programming block on Disney XD, "Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy" will be in line with the blockbuster movie in terms of its story. The series will follow the intergalactic heroes, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora and Drax the Destroyer, as they battle evil forces to keep the universe safe.

"This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio as we get to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe by developing the first-ever Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy animated series," Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, said in a statement. "After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew - now they'll get it."

The poster featured all five superheroes in their animated version but the test footage that was debuted during the NYCC panel only presented Rocket Raccoon in action and a brief appearance of Star-Lord.

"The movie and franchise quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. We're looking forward to working with the great team at Marvel Television to deliver an engaging animated series that fans can enjoy each week," Marc Buhaj, senior vice president of programming and general manager at Disney XD, said during the panel.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" opened to impressive $94 million in August and went on becoming the biggest movie release of 2014. A sequel has been greenlit for a 2017 premiere with all the original cast on board to reprise their roles.
