The 'Iron Man' actor reveals he would like to catch up with his ex, saying, 'I'll make a point of trying to see her while I'm here. I'd like to. I'll ask [Matthew's] permission.'

AceShowbiz - Robert Downey Jr. opened up about his past relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker in a radio interview with Howard Stern on "The Howard Stern Show" on Tuesday, October 7. He said he would ask permission from Matthew Broderick before seeing Sarah.

When asked if he's still in touch with Sarah, Robert replied, "I'll make a point of trying to see her while I'm here. I'd like to." Howard asked him, "Don't you think Matthew Broderick will be upset?" The "Iron Man" actor said, "I'll ask his permission. I just want to check in for a few minutes... I love Matthew Broderick."

Asked if Sarah, whom he dated for several years until their split in 1991, had broken his heart, the star of "The Judge" said, "I've never been the kind of person to acknowledge what's going on with me at the time, and I would try to make light of it, but sure, when you're with someone for seven years, 18 to our mid-20s, it's kind of a big deal."

Howard asked Robert if he ever had salacious thought about his former girlfriend to which he replied, "No, I'd have to ask Matthew's permission." The "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" actor then added, "First of all, I respect both of them so much, and now we have to get past this conversation."

Howard then gave Robert a suggestion to have a lunch with Sarah. Robert said, "For any situation like this, I think enough time has to pass... You don't have to make a big deal of it when the time is right." Asking if Matthew could join the lunch, the "Iron Man 2" actor replied, "I'd love to have him there... Maybe I'll bring [my wife] Susan."

Robert then asked Howard, "Would you mind coming just to kind of mediate the whole thing? It would be a natural extension seeing as you're a part of the conversation." Howard agreed, adding, "I won't shut up during it."

In other news, Robert talked to Ellen Degeneres about his recent tribute to his mother, saying there were intense parallel between his character in "The Judge" and his own life. "The film starts with Hank's mom passing away," he shared, "This whole thing was kind of going on with my mom and her health the whole time, and a few weeks ago she passed."

He continued, "And I felt like I'm not really ready to talk about it yet, but I wanted to - you know, do or say something... So I wrote something for 20 million people to read. But it was kind of part of my grieving process in a way. She was a great gal."
