The 'Iron Man 2' actress will topline the period drama based on Edith Wharton's 1913 novel 'The Custom of the Country'.

AceShowbiz - Scarlett Johansson joins a string of movie stars who are heading to television. The Black Widow in Marvel Cinematic Universe has signed up to star on Sony Pictures TV's limited series "Custom of the Country".

The eight-episode period series from Charles Finch's Pink Sands is based on the Pulitzer Prize winner Edith Wharton's 1913 novel "The Custom of the Country". Christopher Hampton ("Dangerous Liaisons", "Atonement") will write the script.

The limited series is described as "a scathing story of ambition featuring one of the most ruthless heroines in literature, Undine Spragg (Johansson)... Undine is as unscrupulous as she is magnetically beautiful. Her rise to the top of New York's high society from her nouveau riche roots provides a provocative and thoroughly modern commentary on the upwardly mobile and the aspirations that eventually cause their ruin."

The project marks the "Lucy" actress' first major television role. She will executive produce the show along with Hampton and Finch. The project currently still has no home, but it will likely hit a cable network.

Johansson, who gave birth to her first child with fiance Romain Dauriac last September, has completed the filming of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" which is due May 1, 2015 in the U.S.
