Following his DUI arrest in Baltimore, the Olympian says in a statement, 'I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.'

AceShowbiz - Michael Phelps has apologized after being arrested for DUI. Following his run-in with the law on early Tuesday, September 30, the Olympic gold medalist released a statement addressing the drunk-driving charge on Facebook and apologized for his actions.

"Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I'm deeply sorry to everyone I have let down," the statement read.

Phelps was pulled over for speeding at 1:40 A.M. on Tuesday. According to Maryland Transportation Authority Police, the swimmer was driving at 84 mph in a 45-mph zone. The police said he failed breathalyzer test, but they did not reveal the result. Sources, however, told TMZ that Phelps' blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit. The athlete, who was cooperative, was processed at a transportation authority command station and released, the police added.

USA Swimming officials have released a statement after learning of the news. "The news regarding Michael Phelps and his actions are disappointing and unquestionably serious. We expect our athletes to conduct themselves responsibly in and out of the pool," they said.

This was not Phelps' first brush with the law. He was charged with DUI in 2004 in Maryland.
