Damon once said he would be open to reprise his famous role as Jason Bourne if Greengrass also returns.

AceShowbiz - Matt Damon may after all slip in the role of Jason Bourne once again. A new report emerges that the actor is set to reunite with director Paul Greengrass for a third collaboration and a new "Bourne" movie.

Deadline heard from several sources that Universal Pictures would be making deals with the actor and director duo but would not comment on it yet. The studio reportedly is intent on making it happen and wants the movie to take the July 16, 2016 slot which has been secured for untitled new Bourne movie.

Meanwhile, "The Bourne Legacy" sequel starring Jeremy Renner is still in development with Justin Lin taking over from Tony Gilroy as director. The second spin-off reportedly will only come after the one starring Damon. "Universal intends to continue that series and to broaden its franchise base, much the way that Marvel cranks out superhero films," Deadline said.

Damon stated in May this year that he would love to reprise Bourne on one condition. "I've always been open to it if Paul Greengrass is the director," the actor told CNBC. "We've just never been able to come up with a story... It felt like such a good way to end it last time. Having said that, I love that character. I'd love to see what happened to him."

The three original "Bourne" movies grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide at the box office. "The Bourne Legacy", which features Renner as new character Aaron Cross, grossed $276 million worldwide.
