A and E Surprisingly Cancels 'Longmire' After 3 Seasons

Although it was once the network's most-watched original drama series of all time, 'Longmire' could not survive the rating decline.

Despite once being A&E's most-watched original drama series of all time, "Longmire" has met the ax. The modern western series starring Robert Taylor and Katee Sackhoff has experienced a steep downfall in the third season's ratings.

"We would like to thank the phenomenal cast, crew and producers of 'Longmire', along with our partners at Warner Horizon, for their tireless work on three seasons of quality dramatic storytelling," the network said in a statement. "We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved together."

In its premiere season, the drama averaged 4.1 million viewers, becoming the No. 1 scripted show in the network's history. The second season did even better, averaging nearly 6 million, but the third season suffered from the change of lead-in. Once it was led by "Criminal Minds" repeats, "Longmire" averaged 4.6 million.

The cancellation could be a shock for the show's fan base. However, producer Warner Horizon reportedly plans to shop the series elsewhere.
