The 2010 hit movie's director Martin Scorsese was approached with the idea and has signed on to direct the pilot.

HBO and Paramount TV are developing a TV series based on "Shutter Island", the 2010 hit thriller film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. A lot of talent from the movie will be involved in the small screen project, including director Martin Scorsese who is to direct the pilot.

Tentatively titled "Ashecliffe", the script is provided by Dennis Lehane who penned the novel that Scorsese and screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis turned into film. Scorsese, Lehane, DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Brad Fischer, Kalogridis, Rick Yorn, Chris Donnelly, Laeta Koskoff, Mike Medavoy and Arnie Messer will be exec producers.

The series is named after the mental hospital where the movie was set in. Taking place before events in the film, it tells the origin story of the hospital as well as the secrets and misdeeds of its founders who established the facility in the early 20th Century. It will follow how these founders develop methods of treatment for the mentally insane patients.

"Ashecliffe" is a part of Paramount's new TV division's efforts in cashing in from the studio's movie library. It had picked up series based on "The School of Rock", "Grease", "Ghost" and "The Truman Show". Per Deadline, Paramount TV head Amy Powell approached Scorsese and the original movie's producers with the idea to develop "Shutter Island" as series. The production is to start whenever Scorsese is available.
