Jermaine Dupri Defends the Poor Sales of Mariah Carey's 'Chanteuse'

The producer compares the diva's latest studio effort to Kriss Kross and Bow Wow's records that had low first-week sales before selling millions.

Jermaine Dupri isn't worried about the low sales of Mariah Carey's latest album, "Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse". The record, which was pushed back numerous times before being released in late May, posts the diva's smallest opening sales for a non-holiday album after selling only 58,000 in its first week.

Speaking to Rap Up TV recently, Dupri who executive produced "Chanteuse" revealed he believed the LP could still be really big. "I actually feel like it's probably one of her best albums she's ever made," he said. "I'm excited to see where the album ends up. I tell a lot of people, this era of music and this genre, they don't understand records that come out small and sell a lot of records."

He went on comparing Carey's latest full-length to Kriss Kross or Bow Wow's, which had low first-week sales before selling millions. "So it's like the first-week sales sometimes don't really matter," he explained. "I think people gotta start understanding. If you have a plan and you can put the plan in play, you just gotta keep livin' it out."

Carey now plans to shoot a music video for another "Chanteuse" cut called "You Don't Know What to Do", which features rapper Wale.
