At his Saturday, June 28 evening show in Cleveland, Bruno Mars gave an unforgettable performance to 11-year-old Zumyah Thorpe. Bruno serenaded the girl with his hit "Just the Way You Are", creating an incredibly touching moment in the concert.
He also posted some pictures of them together on Instagram. The first photo was captioned, "Tonight's show was dedicated to this amazing young woman. I love you Zumyah." The second picture was even warmer, with Bruno kissing Zumyah's cheek and Zumyah smiling very brightly. Bruno wrote along with the pic, "Zumyah tonight you gave my band and I something we've never felt before. you're an inspiration to the world! #WeLoveYouZumyah."
Zumyah was a survivor of a drunk driving incident which took place last year. The car crash killed her pregnant mother and two sisters. Surviving the crash, Zumyah suffered from some terrible brain injury. Many people with the kind of injury don't survive or remain in vegetative state. Zumyah's motoric and language skill was also affected, but she was still able to sing to her favorite singer Bruno's tunes. Her doctors then prescribed Bruno songs to be played daily during her treatment in the hospital. The therapy seemed to work. Nancy Bass, M.D. told WKYC, "Knowing all the words to the songs has helped her recover and helped her to learn to actually have language."
When Bruno learned of her heartbreaking survival story, he soon wanted to see her. A private meeting was then arranged before the Cleveland concert, where Bruno sang four songs in front of Zumyah and her family. Bruno was even said performing a special song titled "Zumyah's Day" for the little girl. The girl also received a teddy bear from Bruno, and of course a kiss on the cheek.
