Darren Aronofsky Adapting 'MaddAddam' Book Trilogy Into HBO Series

The 'Noah' helmer will executive produce a TV show based on Margaret Atwood's futuristic book trilogy for the cable channel.

Darren Aronofsky is developing a TV series based on Margaret Atwood's "MaddAddam" book trilogy for HBO. The Oscar-nominated director will executive produce the show with his fiancee Brandi-Ann Milbrandt and Ari Handel. He reportedly also considers to direct it.

The project comes as part of a first-look deal that Aronofsky inked with HBO in January. The story in the books, which Atwood described as "speculative fiction," is set in the mid-21st century in a world where corporations have taken over for governments and the genetic modification of organisms is the norm.

The trilogy began with "Oryx and Crake" (2003) and concluded with "The Year of the Flood" (2009), which offers an alternative perspective of the events in the first novel. While the first and third books run along a parallel timeline, "Maddaddam" is the continuation of both books. It centers on events before and after a Waterless Flood which nearly wiped out people on Earth.

Should Aronofsky sign up to direct "MaddAddam", it will mark his first small-screen directing gig. The "Black Swan" helmer's latest movie "Noah" was released on March 28.
