Ryan Murphy Confirms 'Funny Girl' Broadway Revival With Lea Michele

The 'Glee' creator says of his plan to bring back 'Funny Girl' to the Great White Way, 'Right now, we're just sort of testing the waters with different people.'

Ryan Murphy confirms he is working on a Broadway rival of "Funny Girl" with Lea Michele now that "Glee" is almost done. "I have the rights to it," he told Entertainment Weekly. "It's something that we’re talking about. I've never done Broadway. I've always wanted to. Right now, we're just sort of testing the waters with different people."

"[Lea] and I have made no mistake of our mutual love for that property," Murphy said, before adding, "So if it could come together at a time that she'd be willing to make that commitment to go back to Broadway - which I don't know that she is right now - it would have to be the right director and the right leading man."

On Glee, Michele's Rachel Berry already won her dream role as Fanny in the "Funny Girl" revival. When asked by Broadway World if she's interested in playing the character in a real-life new version of "Funny Girl" stage production, she said, "Yeah, it is. We are definitely talking about it now. We have the rights."

"And, right now, we are talking to some potential directors - we have someone really amazing in mind. We probably won't have the opportunity to do it for a while, though, because we still have a long time left on GLEE. But, yes, you are right - Ryan does have the rights. And, when the time is right and I have had the chance to get some good rest for a while after Glee and I feel ready to do it then definitely we will do it."
