Spike Lee to Turn 'She's Gotta Have It' Into Series for Showtime

The Oscar-nominated director is developing a half-hour comedy based on his 1986 first feature film debut.

Spike Lee is bringing his "She's Gotta Have It" into the small screen. The director/producer/writer is working on a comedy series, which is based on his 1986 first feature film debut, for Showtime.

According to Deadline, the TV show will be a "contemporary look at the characters and will explore Lee's unique and provocative points of view about race, gender, sexuality, relationships, and the gentrification in Brooklyn." Lee is set to write and attached to direct the reboot project.

Lee first gained recognition with "She's Gotta Have It", which he shot in 12 days in 1985 on a budget of $175,000. It won an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.

The movie stars Tracy Camilla Johns as a young, attractive, sexually independent Brooklynite who won't commit to any of her three suitors, played by Tommy Redmond Hicks, John Canada Terrell and Lee himself. Enjoying each of their company while still cherishing her personal freedom, Nora represents African American women's struggle in society at the time.
