Steven Spielberg to Direct Adaptation of Children's Book 'The BFG'

The 'Lincoln' director is attached to sit at the helm for DreamWorks' take on the classic tale of Big Friendly Giant.

Another project is piled up to Steven Spielberg's schedule. The Hollywood Reporter learns that the director has been attached to sit behind the lens for an upcoming movie translation of Roald Dahl's 1982 children's book "The BFG" for DreamWorks.

The project has been in the works since 2011. The live-action film will be based on the fantastical tale of a Big Friendly Giant who befriends a young orphan girl. Melissa Mathison, who penned "E.T., writes the screenplay.

Kathleen Kennedy was initially set to produce with Frank Marshall. A series of directors like John Madden and Chris Columbus were once linked to the project. Marshall remains producer, while Madden will serve as an executive producer with Michael Siegel. Kennedy herself is now busy producing new "Star Wars" movies for Disney.

Spielberg hasn't directed any movie since 2012's "Lincoln". He is pursuing sci-fi tentpole "Robopocalypse", Aztec drama "Montezuma", true-story drama "The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara", and an untitled Cold War movie.
