Roland Emmerich to Direct Gay Rights Drama 'Stonewall' Starring Jeremy Irvine
The 'White House Down' helmer will helm a film that recounts a 1969 police raid in a famous gathering place for gays and transgenders.

While pursuing "Independence Day" sequel, Roland Emmerich will direct "Stonewall" with Jeremy Irvine playing the lead role. It's a drama depicting a true-story event in 1969 that triggered off massive fights against homosexual oppression.

Scripted by Jon Robin Baitz, the film will revisit a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village which was known as a gathering place for gays and transgenders. It will center on a young man's political awakening in the backdrop of those riots.

Irvine made his breakthrough with his role in Steven Spielberg's "War Horse". He was last seen on the big screen in "The Railway Man". His next movies include "The Woman in Black: Angels of Death" and "The World Made Straight".

Emmerich, meanwhile, last sat behind the lens for political action thriller "White House Down" starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx.
