'True Detective' to Compete as Drama Series, Not Miniseries, at Emmys

The eight-part drama starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will likely be battling it out against 'Breaking Bad', 'Mad Men', 'Downton Abbey' and 'House of Cards' among others.

HBO is apparently not keen for an easy competition at the upcoming Primetime Emmy Awards. Instead of submitting its anthology series "True Detective" as miniseries, the cable channel will submit the eight-episode limited drama to compete as a drama series.

The Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson starrer could have easily fit under the newly-reinstated miniseries category, with FX's "American Horror Story: Coven" as a sole strong competitor so far.

The Nic Pizzolatto-created crime series will now face a stiff competition against the likes of "Breaking Bad", "Mad Men", "Homeland", "Downton Abbey", "House of Cards", "Game of Thrones" and "Boardwalk Empire".

In comedy category, HBO's submission list includes "Eastbound & Down", "Family Tree", "Getting On", "Girls", "Hello Ladies", "Looking", "Silicon Valley" and "Veep".

Another network, Showtime, has recently announced that it switches "Shameless" to comedy category after being submitted as a drama for the past three seasons.

This year's Emmy Awards will be held Monday, August 25 and air live coast-to-coast from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 8-11 P.M. ET / 5-8 P.M. PT. A host for the ceremony is yet to be announced.
