Police: Kurt Cobain's Case 'Reexamined' NOT 'Reopened'

Police: Kurt Cobain's Case 'Reexamined' NOT 'Reopened'
Ahead of the Nirvana singer's 20th death anniversary, Seattle police plan to release some photos that have been sitting in the evidence room.

The news media was set ablaze by the report that police had reopened Kurt Cobain's death case. However, a police spokeswoman has confirmed that it was not a reopening but rather a reexamination.

Ahead of Cobain's 20th death anniversary next month, a Seattle police cold-case detective recently took another look at the case file. The initial report was that the police were developing rolls of film having to do with the case that had been sitting in the police evidence fault. Detective Renee Witt told Washington Post that the detective found some old and undeveloped film, which provided better-quality photos of images already out there.

The spokeswoman also confirmed on Thursday, March 20 afternoon, "No, we have not reopened the Kurt Cobain case." She continued, "No change, no developments, no new leads," adding any report suggesting it was reopened are "very very incorrect."

Witt said police planned to release some of the new photographs on its blog and would answer questions on the anniversary of Cobain's death which happens on April 5. The Nirvana singer and guitarist was found dead of a shotgun wound in his home on Lake Washington Boulevard three days after he died. He was 27. An electrician named Gary Smith found the body and a suicide note. Police ruled it a suicide but many theorized that he could be murdered.
