The '12 Years a Slave' star wins the prestigious gong over Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, June Squibb, and Sally Hawkins.


Lupita Nyong'o won big at the 86th annual Academy Awards, thanks to her role in slavery drama "12 Years a Slave". She beat Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, June Squibb, and Sally Hawkins to receive the coveted Best Supporting Actress which was presented by Christoph Waltz.

"It doesn't escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else's," she stated in her acceptance speech. "No matter where you're from your dreams are valid." To director Steve McQueen, she said, "Thank you so much for putting me in this position. It has been the joy of my life."

So far, "Gravity" was the early dominator at the event, ahead of "Dallas Buyers Club" which already pocketed two prizes. After winning Best Visual Effects, the Sandra Bullock and George Clooney starrer grabbed Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

The Best Sound Mixing was presented by Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron after host Ellen DeGeneres took a selfie with her famous friends like J.Law, Jared Leto, Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Nyong'o.
