Original Japanese 'Godzilla' Gets U.S. Debut on April 12

The uncut version of the very first film will premiere at TCM Classic Film Festival before playing nationwide starting at New York's Film Forum.

The original Japanese version of "Godzilla" is heading to U.S. theaters to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The vintage film will debut April 12 at the fifth TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, followed by a national release beginning at New York's Film Forum which runs from April 18-24.

The film was first released in the country in 1956 as "Godzilla: King of the Monsters". It's an atrociously cut, dubbed and re-edited version that inserted American actor Raymond Burr into the action. Only an hour was used of the original's 98 minute running time.

Directed by Ishiro Honda, the original, uncut version has an all-Japanese cast including Takashi Shimura, who the very same year appeared as leader of the Seven Samurai. The monster story has since spawned numerous sequels and remakes.

The latest reboot is a film directed by Gareth Edwards. Starring Aaron Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston and Ken Watanabe, it is due to make its way out Stateside on May 16 this year.
