The third-time box office champion is followed by holdover 'Frozen', which gets a boost from sing-along version, and new release 'That Awkward Moment' which stars Zac Efron.
It was a quite week at domestic box office as all eyes are focusing on the big football game. Universal's "Ride Along", the cop comedy starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, takes the top spot for the third consecutive weekend. It rakes in another $12.3 million (42% decrease), pushing its domestic total of $93 million over the Super Bowl weekend.
The biggest debut this week is Focus Features' "That Awkward Moment" led by Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller. With a B grade from CinemaScore, the R-rated bromance indie comedy opens at No. 3, collecting an estimated $9 million, with 64% of audience female and 61% of ticket buyers under the age of 25.
The $8M pic sits behind "Frozen (2013)" which rises two spots after getting a sing-along release last Friday. The Disney animation adds an estimated $9.3 million, including $2.2 million from the karaoke version, to occupy the second place at the movie chart. The family-friendly film is now grossing $864.4 million worldwide including $360 million in North America.
Another big-screen release from Paramount Pictures, "Labor Day", finishes at the seventh spot with an estimated $5.3 million against a reported budget of $18 million in its debut weekend. Directed by Jason Reitman, the drama appealed to older audience with 55 percent over the age of 35 and 42 percent of them over the age of 50.
Open Road Films' animation "The Nut Job" and Universal's war film "Lone Survivor" round up the top 5 with around $7.6 million and $7.2 million respectively. The former has grossed $50.2 million nationally after three weeks of release, while the latter moves past the $100 million mark domestically after six weeks on the market.
"I, Frankenstein" continues to disappoint. After a weak opening, the new reimagining of Mary Shelley's monster character slips from No. 6 to the bottom spot at the top 10. It only takes in an estimated $3.5 million for a $14.5 million domestic total. The $65 million-budgeted film, however, is expected to perform better overseas as it opened $13 million outside the U.S. in its first weekend.
