Gilligan defeats fellow nominee and 'Breaking Bad' actor Bryan Cranston for the dramatic series award, while Soderbergh wins a trophy for his work on TV movie 'Behind the Candelabra'.

AceShowbiz - Directors Guild of America honored the men behind some TV shows at its 66th annual awards ceremony on Saturday, January 25. Hosted by "Glee" star Jane Lynch, the event witnessed Vince Gilligan being recognized for his work on "Breaking Bad" series finale. He took home the dramatic series award, edging out Bryan Cranston who was also nominated for directing an episode of the crime drama series.
Cranston, earning two nominations in total, also failed to claim the prize in comedy series category through his work on "Modern Family". The award went to Beth McCarthy-Miller for directing "30 Rock" finale.
Steven Soderbergh nabbed the award for movies for television and miniseries, thanks to "Behind the Candelabra". He was also presented with Robert B. Aldrich Service Award to recognize "his extraordinary service to the Directors Guild of America and to its membership."
Other TV winners included Don Roy King for "Saturday Night Live", Glenn Weiss for the 67th Annual Tony Awards and Neil P. DeGroot for reality show "72 Hours".
The 2014 DGA Awards also handed out prizes for movie directors and special awards. Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers accepted the Diversity Award for their commitment to diversity hiring and providing jobs and opportunities to women and minorities in DGA-covered categories.
"It's fairly shameful that there's a lack of diversity in Hollywood in 2014," so "Scandal" creator Rhimes said on stage. "The lack of diversity in Hollywood is not because of a lack of talent. It's because of a lack of access."
Lee Blaine was honored with Frank Capra Achievement Award (given to an Assistant Director or Unit Production Manager in recognition of career achievement in the industry and service to the DGA) and Vincent DeDario was presented with Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award (given to an Associate Director or Stage Manager in recognition of career achievement in the industry and service to the DGA).
