NBC's 'Murder, She Wrote' Reboot Is Dead

The network has scrapped the proposed re-imagining of the Angela Lansbury-starring procedural series, but may still revisit it with different approach.

NBC has killed "Murder, She Wrote" reboot. Deadline reports the network has decided not to move forward with the project, which was developed as a new take on the 1990s series starring Angela Lansbury.

The Peacock, however, has not given up on a "Murder, She Wrote" remake. The network's execs reportedly still want to revive the mystery series possibly with a new concept since the original show was a big hit.

The scrapped "Murder, She Wrote" reboot had tapped Octavia Spencer in the lead role as an astute amateur detective. It was envisioned "as a light, contemporary procedural in the vein of 'Bones' or 'Fargo'."

The story would follow "a hospital administrator and amateur sleuth (Spencer) who self-publishes her first mystery novel. Set in a day where sensational headlines inundate the news, this woman's avid fascination with true crime leads her to become an active participant in the investigations."

Spencer, who won an Academy Award for her role in 2011's movie "The Help", is expected to be one of the most sought-after actresses for pilots this season now that she's no longer attached to "Murder, She Wrote" reboot.
