Steven Soderbergh may have retired from making movies, but he didn't completely abandon his profession as a director. After trying out his hand on the small screen with TV movie "Behind the Candelabra" and historical miniseries "The Knick", he is now heading to off-Broadway.

The "Magic Mike" helmer is making a stage play that takes on one of today's hot issues, gun violence. Titled "The Library", the project is expected to play at New York's The Public Theater and will center on a school shooting survivor played by "Carrie" actress Chloe Moretz.

Soderbergh teams up with Scott Z. Burns, who previously worked with the director in his last feature film "Side Effects" released last year. Burns says he "wanted to write a play about the stories we tell each other in the face of calamity - the pretty lies and the brutal truths."

The show will follow Caitlin Gabriel (Moretz) after she survives a deadly shooting at her high school. She struggles to tell her story to her parents, the authorities and anyone who will listen. But there are other narratives that gain purchase in the media and paint her in a different light.
