'Magic: The Gathering' Will Be Made Into Movie


The popularity of the card game prompted 20th Century Fox to buy the screen rights and develop it with toy company Hasbro.

"Magic: The Gathering" will move to big screen. 20th Century Fox has nabbed the screen rights to the popular card game from Hasbro and will develop it with the help from "X-Men" and "The Fantastic Four" franchise scribe Simon Kinberg.

According to THR, the studio plans to launch "Magic" the movie on the scale of "The Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter". Kinberg will be in charge of producing, engineering and overseeing the development of the movie series together with Hasbro execs, Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis, Wizards of the Coast CEO Greg Leeds as well as other execs.

"Magic: The Gathering" was introduced in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast as trading card game that grew popular among tweens, teens and young adults in the '90s. So popular the game was that it spawned tournaments worldwide. The game involves cards with a variety of characters, spells and weapons that are used to fight opposing players. In 1999, Hasbro bought Wizards of the Coast which acquired the game's licenses.
