New Writer to Continue Stieg Larsson's 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' Book Series

David Lagercrantz will write the fourth novel which was abandoned after the original author died from heart attack in 2004.

A fourth installment of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" book series is in the works. David Lagercrantz is tapped to write a new story about Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomqvist, the characters created by the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson.

The original author had allegedly started working on a fourth novel when he died in 2004 from heart attack at the age of 50. "We have now decided to let somebody take over and tell what happened next," said Eva Gedin from Swedish publishing house Norstedts.

The upcoming book is due for publication in August 2015. Lagercrantz, the co-author of a book about Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, said he "already started writing it." He added, "It's terribly fun. It's a fantastic world to step into."

According to BBC, the publisher didn't have access to Larsson's partially-completed story for the fourth book so they would start fresh. John-Henri Holmberg, who translated one of Larsson's early short stories, said Larsson had written the ending to the story and intended to "go back and start the story from the beginning."

The first three books have sold more than 75 million copies in 50 countries across the globe. It was first released in 2005 with Swedish title "Men Who Hate Women" before being re-titled "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" for the English version. Two other books, "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest", followed.

The story has been turned into both Swedish and Hollywood movies. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara play Blomqvist and Salander respectively in a 2011 film adaptation of the same name, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)". Directed by David Fincher, it won an Oscar for Best Editing.
