The Showtime series kills off one of its major characters that will shift the focus of the upcoming fourth season.
"Homeland" had seemingly prepared fans for this by not featuring Brody in the first few episodes of the season. After toying with the idea of his possible redemption, the show [SPOILER ALERT!] inevitably killed off the character played by Damian Lewis in the season 3 finale.
After carrying out CIA's mission to kill General Akbari, a U.S.-controlled Iranian asset Javadi insisted he had to execute Brody so that he would be promoted to Akbari's position. Saul was against this and tried to scoop Carrie and Brody out of the country, but that was ruined when Salieri reported this to Lockhart, who later took over the control.
Carrie got to meet Brody while he's in capture, telling him that she would save him after earlier revealing about her pregnancy. But Brody was apparently ready to accept his fate, saying, "It's over. I want it to be over." He was eventually hanged in public, while Carrie watched in distance.
The show then jumped four months. Saul's no longer in CIA and set up his own firm in the private sector. Carrie was heavily pregnant but decided to give up the baby for adoption. She accepted Director Lockhart's offer to be the CIA station chief in Istanbul.
Some fans were upset with Brody's death. Celebrities like Carrie Ann Inaba and Alyssa Milano have expressed their feelings on Twitter, with the former writing, "Brody!!!!!! Good season finale #homeland I cried like a baby!!!" and the latter posting, "#Homeland #mixedfeelings."
Mandy Moore was seemingly shocked as writing, "Wait, was that the series finale of Homeland? #alreadymissingsaul," while "Anger Management" star Noureen DeWulf tweeted, "How could you, homeland?!? I'm so upset."
Shaun Toub, who plays Javadi, sang praise to Damian Lewis. "@lewis_damian you were incredible as Brody. A pleasure to have worked with you and know you. Much love. #Homeland. @SHO_Homeland," he wrote on his own Twitter.
