Not only Beyonce Knowles managed to keep the recording of her new studio album a secret but also the filming of 17 videos that accompany the album. The singer has released snippets of the videos for such songs as "Mine" Feat. Drake, "Superpower" Feat. Frank Ocean, "Drunk in Love" Feat. Jay-Z and "Blue" Feat. Blue Ivy.
In getting the videos done, Beyonce called for the assistance of notable directors such as Jonas Akerlund, Melina Matsoukas, Jake Nava and Hype Williams among others. She also self-directed some of her videos and included daughter Blue Ivy in "Blue". She used New York City, Houston, Paris, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro as backdrops for her music videos. Beyonce reasoned, "I just want to give my album to the people I love and respect and hope that they feel the same thing I felt when I made the music."
The tracks are included in Beyonce's first visual album which was released on Friday, December 13 on iTunes. "I see music," she said of creating a visual album. "It's more than just what I hear. When I'm connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they're all connected to the music."
She continued, "I didn't want to release my music the way I've done it. I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There's so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn't want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready and from me to my fans."
The new album will be available in double disc CD/DVD in time for the holidays while the tracks will be available for individual purchase on iTunes starting December 20. Some of the video snippets are embedded below while the rest can be found on Beyonce's official YouTube channel.
