Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks to Nab Remake Rights to Cannes Hit 'Like Father, Like Son'

The Japanese film, written and directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, was awarded by Spielberg and his fellow Cannes jurors with the Prix du Jury prize in May.

Steven Spielberg's jury duty at Cannes Film Festival in May might result in a new project being developed at DreamWorks. Deadline learns that the studio, in which Spielberg serves as a principal partner, enters talks with Fuji TV to nab the remake rights to "Like Father, Like Son", a Japanese movie which won the Prix du Jury prize at the prestigious French festival.

Written and directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, the drama follows a successful businessman who learns that his biological son was switched with another child after birth. A life-changing decision has to be made, whether he choses his true son, raised by a rough yet caring family, or the boy he has been living with.

Sources with the knowledge tell the site that Spielberg has no intention of making the project his next directorial gig after dropping out of "American Sniper". In "Sniper", he was originally set to direct Bradley Cooper, who is also committed to the project as a producer alongside Andrew Lazar and Peter Morgan.

Whether or not fans will eventually see Spielberg sitting in the director's seat remains to be seen later once the rights are acquired. "Like Father, Like Son" will also be screened at Toronto International Film Festival in September.
