Hugh Jackman sends his latest movie up to the throne, ending the dominance of last week's champ 'The Conjuring'.
"The Wolverine" slashes way to the top box office spot. The Marvel film starring Australian hunk Hugh Jackman as the titular superhero easily claims the throne with $53.1 million for the studio. Though the Japan-set film fails to open huge as expected before, it's able to take a great $85.3 million overseas.
"It's a huge opening for the clawed one," Chris Aronson, Fox's head of domestic distribution, says of the James Mangold movie in which Famke Janssen reprises her role as Jean Grey, Logan's love interest. As cited by Associated Press, Aronson continues gushing over the film's performance at the box office, "It played equally well from Maine to Maui."
At No. 2 right in its second run, "The Conjuring" drops 46.9% to $22.2 million for Warner Bros. The James Wan horror flick, which stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, already labels itself the highest-grossing horror movie of 2013 with $83.9 million.
Taking the third position is "Despicable Me 2". The minions help their latest movie earn $16.4 million in its fourth outing. Another animated movie making it to the top five is "Turbo" which claims the fourth slot with $13.7 million. Trailing behind the Ryan Reynolds starrer is "Grown Ups 2" with $11.6 million.
Two other new entries also perform well at the box office. Playing at 591 theaters, "The To Do List" makes $1.6 million. Meanwhile, Woody Allen makes his biggest box-office debut ever with "Blue Jasmine" which takes in $612,064.
