George Strait Mourns the Loss of His Father, Cancels Performance at CMT Music Awards

The 'Troubadour' singer is grateful for being able to spend time with his father during his final days and thanks fans for their condolences and prayers.

AceShowbiz - George Strait is in grief. The 61-year-old country music crooner announces that his father, John Byron Strait, passed away Tuesday, June 4 after declining health. In light of the sad news, the singer was forced to cancel his scheduled performance at the CMT Music Awards Wednesday.

"We are grateful for the time over the last few weeks we were able to spend with Daddy before he passed away," George says in a statement on his official website. "I want to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time as we mourn our family's loss."

John was a junior high school mathematics teacher and a rancher. He was 91. He is survived by his wife Anna, son George Strait, daughter Pency Edel, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son John 'Buddy' Byron Strait Jr. and granddaughter Jenifer Strait.

The funeral service will be reserved for friends and family only. In lieu of gifts, well-wishers are kindly asked to make donation to The Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation, which was launched in memory of George's daughter who was killed in a tragic car accident. The money will go to various children charities.
