It was a Classic Rock Night on "American Idol" Wednesday, April 3. The remaining seven finalists returned to the stage and some had to step out of their comfort zone since no ballads were allowed that night.
Burnell Taylor covered Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name". Struggling to deliver the rock song, he sounded more like growling a few times. Keith Urban noticed that Burnell was "uncomfortable" with the song, saying, "I'm going to assume rock 'n' roll's not your thing."
After a duet of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Lazaro Arbos and Angie Miller in which the former forgot some lyrics, Kree Harrison showed up to sing Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart". She seemed struggling to stand up with her towering boots, but she admitted that she had "a pinched nerve."
The judges, however, had nothing but praises for her performance. "That's how you come out and rock the stage," Randy Jackson said. Mariah Carey praised her "innate ability to choose" songs, while Nicki Minaj exclaimed, "That was magnificent, Miss Lady."
Burnell took the stage once again to sing The Box Tops' "The Letter" with Candice Glover, and he did better than in his solo performance. Janelle Arthur came out next with "You May Be Right" by Billy Joel. Keith thought it wasn't the best song choice, but Randy said the song "fit you like a top." Mariah said, "I really enjoyed watching you," and Nicki liked it too.
Lazaro Arbos went with "We Are the Champions" by Queen. Mariah and Randy said Lazaro did a good job, and Nicki believed his "Lazzies out there are going to be voting again!" Keith added, "That was a really good song choice for you."
Amber, Janelle and Kree later teamed up for a rendition of "It's Still Rock 'n Roll to Me" by Billy Joel. Nicki said, "That put me to sleep," but the other judges didn't think so as the three of them sang praises.
For her solo performance, Candice Glover covered The Rolling Stones' "I Can't Get No Satisfaction". She hurt her toe before the show when pulling an April Fool joke on Lazaro and Keith noticed she barely moved around the stage. Randy said it wasn't the perfect song for her, but she "put her back into it." Nicki praised Candice's voice, but added, "I fell asleep with that song, too." The raptress then booed herself, knowing that the audience would do that to her.
Next, Amber Holcomb sang "What About Love?" by Heart and got a standing ovation from the judges. "It was striking... The first line out of your mouth just completely melted me," Nicki gushed, calling it her favorite of the night. Mariah added, "I think you did a really great job, and you can hear all your natural inflections."
Angie Miller was the last performer of the night, singing "Bring Me to Life" by Evanescence behind a piano. "I think that this was a good choice for you, because you were able to start on the piano but still stay true to the genre we're doing tonight," Nicki raved. Randy loved Angie's "stellar" last note and Mariah thought the song fit Angie.
Watching the Top 7 performances from the audience seat were Joshua Ledet and Hollie Cavanagh of "Idol" season 11.
