Martin Scorsese to Turn 'Gangs of New York' Into TV Series

The Academy Award-winning director joins forces with Mirimax to develop a TV series based on his 2002 critically-acclaimed movie.

Martin Scorsese is going to bring "Gangs of New York" to the small screen. The notable filmmaker and Mirimax announce that they are developing a TV series based on the 2002 fictional historical drama which Scorsese directed.

Set in the 1800s, the series will not only feature stories of the gangs in New York, but also in other cities such as Chicago and New Orleans. "This time and era of America's history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film," Scorsese explains his decision to develop the TV series.

He additionally reasons, "A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life." There's still no word on which network the show will air.

"Gangs of New York" movie starred Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz among others. It earned ten Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (for Day-Lewis), and Best Director.

Scorsese has previously found success with period drama series "Boardwalk Empire", which will debut its fourth season on HBO this fall.
